ANSWER THE CALL!

When you see "MD COVID" or 240-466-4488, please answer the call. This call is a public health professional with information about potential exposure to COVID-19. CovidLINK is Maryland's contact tracing initiative that helps identify people who may have come into contact with an individual that has tested positive for COVID-19.

If you or someone you know are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, please get tested. Testing locations in Washington County are listed below in the next section.

Please continue to wear a face covering, maintain physical distance, and wash your hands frequently as we stay safe and prevent the spread of COVID-19 in our community.

Contact Tracing Update

Due to significant increases in the daily volume of COVID-19 positive individuals in our county, the Washington County Health Department is working diligently alongside NORC call center to notify all positive cases and their contacts in a timely manner.

Currently NORC call center is making all first contact attempts for COVID-19 positive individuals in Washington County. When you see “MD COVID” or (240) 466-4488 on your phone, please answer the call. If NORC is unable to reach the individual, Washington County Health Department is notified and attempts to reach the COVID-19 positive individual.

The key things to know if you test positive but don’t get a call are to isolate (please see the FAQs about Isolation and Quarantine) and to tell your close contacts* of their exposure.

We urge Washington County residents to cooperate and help contact tracer by answering all the questions they ask. Your honest answers and the information you provide will help us in slowing the spread of COVID-19. Your cooperation in contact tracing efforts plays a crucial role in keeping our community healthy.

* Close contact is described by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as being within 6 feet of an infected person for a cumulative total of 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period starting from 2 days before illness onset (or, for asymptomatic patients, 2 days prior to test specimen collection) until the time the patient is isolated. Cumulative total can be determined by adding individual exposures over a 24-hour period (e.g., three 5-minute exposures for a total of 15 minutes)

COVID-19 Advisory for Indoor Food Service, Retails, and Personal Service Establishments

MARYLAND MASK MANDATE IS LIFTED; MASKS STILL REQUIRED ON PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION, SCHOOLS, AND HEALTHCARE SETTINGS. The governor announced the mask mandate has now been lifted for the State of Maryland for those who are fully vaccinated. For those who are not vaccinated, it is strongly encouraged to continue wearing a mask and to get vaccinated.

WORK SEARCH REQUIREMENTS TO BE REINSTATED NEXT MONTH. To further accelerate the state’s economic recovery and with every business in Maryland fully reopened, Governor Hogan has directed the Maryland Department of Labor to work in collaboration with the federal administration to begin the process of reinstating work search requirements to connect more job seekers with good opportunities. The requirements are scheduled to be reinstated by late June.

Governor Hogan announced today that the mask mandate for the State of Maryland is now lifted. For those who are fully vaccinated, masks are no longer required except in certain settings. Masks are still required on public transportation, in schools, and in healthcare settings.  For those who are not vaccinated, it is strongly encouraged to continue wearing a mask and to get vaccinated.

If you’ve been fully vaccinated:

  • You can resume activities that you did prior to the pandemic.

  • You can resume activities without wearing a mask or staying 6 feet apart, except where required by federal, state, local, tribal, or territorial laws, rules, and regulations, including local business and workplace guidance.

  • If you travel in the United States, you do not need to get tested before or after travel or self-quarantine after travel.

  • You need to pay close attention to the situation at your international destination before traveling outside the United States.
  • You do NOT need to get tested before leaving the United States unless your destination requires it.
  • You still need to show a negative test result or documentation of recovery from COVID-19 before boarding an international flight to the United States.
  • You should still get tested 3-5 days after international travel.
  • You do NOT need to self-quarantine after arriving in the United States.

  • If you’ve been around someone who has COVID-19, you do not need to stay away from others or get tested unless you have symptoms.
  • However, if you live or work in a correctional or detention facility or a homeless shelter and are around someone who has COVID-19, you should still get tested, even if you don’t have symptoms.

  • You will still need to follow guidance at your workplace and local businesses.

  • If you travel, you should still take steps to protect yourself and others. You will still be required to wear a mask on planes, buses, trains, and other forms of public transportation traveling into, within, or out of the United States, and in U.S. transportation hubs such as airports and stations. Fully vaccinated international travelers arriving in the United States are still required to get tested within 3 days of their flight (or show documentation of recovery from COVID-19 in the past 3 months) and should still get tested 3-5 days after their trip.

  • You should still watch out for symptoms of COVID-19, especially if you’ve been around someone who is sick. If you have symptoms of COVID-19, you should get tested and stay home and away from others.

People who have a condition or are taking medications that weaken the immune system, should talk to their healthcare provider to discuss their activities. They may need to keep taking all precautions to prevent COVID-19.

The Washington County Health Department staff are working in coordination with the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) to help gather and assess information and prepare a surge plan for the county. Many of our staff working at the health department are providing support and assisting with the preparations for the surge plan. This plan will allow the county to have steps in place to take further actions if needed in order to care for an increase of COVID-19 patients.

The Washington County Health Department's Health Officer, Medical Director, and Emergency Preparedness team are working alongside the County Government, Meritus Health, first responders, law enforcement agencies and the City of Hagerstown, to plan and prepare a county surge plan in preparation of increased COVID-19 cases over the next couple of weeks. In preparing for the county's surge plan we take into consideration other partners' infrastructure such as nursing homes, state facilities, and Hagerstown Community College. We assess our and partners' current assets such as medical supplies, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), the medical ambulance bus, hospital tents, and FEMA trailers. The health department staff are also surveying our almost 250 Maryland Responds Medical Reserve Corps volunteers, registered in Washington County, for availability to assist as staffing needs evolve.

The Health Department is investigating this case with the help of the of the Maryland Department of Health. Communicable Disease nurses will identify contacts and advise them of any necessary actions to take. Information will be released as soon as possible if any risk to the public is identified.

While the potential risk of illness to the general public is still very low, many residents are concerned about testing for the COVID-19 virus. Here are answers to the most common questions:

1. How do I know if I should be tested?

If you start to experience symptoms, call your health care provider. The physician or practitioner will assess your symptoms, ask about your travel history and whether you have been exposed to someone with a confirmed case of COVID-19. With that information, they will determine if diagnostic testing for the COVID-19 virus is appropriate. If your health care provider suspects COVID-19, they will coordinate testing with the local and state health departments.

2. How many tests have been administered in Washington County?
As of Saturday, March 21, 2020, 663 tests have been administered in Washington County. The tests have been sent to either the state’s department of health lab or commercial labs.

3. Where can I be tested?
Meritus Health has established a drive-thru screening center for patients who have been referred by their physicians to be screened or who have been directed to the drive-thru after calling the COVID-19 care line (301-790-9170).

  • This screening site has been established behind Meritus Medical Plaza located at 13620 Crayton Blvd., Hagerstown, Md. The drive-thru screening center is open from 7:00 a.m.- 7:00 p.m. daily.

This coming week, Meritus will officially open two walk-thru screening centers in and near the city of Hagerstown. These will again be for patients directed to them by health care professionals to receive flu and COVID-19 testing. Locations and times will be announced by Meritus Health on their website and social media channels.

Meritus Health is currently working with a commercial laboratory for the COVID-19 testing. The estimated turnaround time for results is between five to seven days based on the commercial lab process.

4. Is there a COVID-19 home test?
There is no COVID-19 home test kit on the market for sale. People who suspect they have COVID-19 should contact their health care provider, who will determine if that patient has signs and symptoms compatible with COVID-19 and will determine whether patients will be referred for lab testing.

5. Will everyone need a test?
Regardless of whether people are tested, medical advice will remain the same; isolation and treating symptoms with fluids to reduce the risk of dehydration, medication to reduce a fever, and supplemental oxygen in more severe cases.

6. How can I get more information on COVID-19?
This is a rapidly changing situation, and information is being shared as it becomes available. Accurate COVID-19 information is critical to the community. For the most current and accurate information about the situation, please refer to the following:

  • Washington County Health Department
  • Meritus Health
  • Maryland Department of Health (MDH)
  • Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC)
  • Washington County Government

7. How can I help prevent the spread of COVID-19?
We strongly encourage the community to continue preventive measures such as:
  • cover your coughs and sneezes
  • wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
  • avoid touching your face
  • clean frequently touched surfaces and objects daily
  • stay at home if you are sick

Social distancing measures are paramount at this time. To reduce the spread of the COVID-19 virus, take these measures and recommendations seriously. These measures are strongly recommended, especially to vulnerable populations such as adults over sixty and those with pre-existing medical conditions. If you feel you are experiencing symptoms of coronavirus like fever, cough and shortness of breath, contact a healthcare provider to discuss symptoms before going to urgent care or the emergency room unless it is a medical emergency.
